The Pie in the Fry Burger
This crazy burger is a comfort foodie's delight with deep-fried slices of pizza as buns housing a mouth-watering meatball burger with marinara sauce.

Ingredients

Pizza Buns

cup flour

tsp each salt and pepper

1 Tbsp water

1 Tbsp egg, beaten

1 Tbsp vegetable oil

2 cups breadcrumbs

1 whole frozen pizza

Meatball Burgers

cup milk

cup fine breadcrumbs

1 egg

1 tsp salt

Freshly ground black pepper

cup grated Parmesan cheese

cup Italian parsley, finely minced

lb(s) ground beef

lb(s) ground pork

cup onion, finely chopped

1 clove garlic, finely minced

Marinara Sauce

28 oz canned whole tomatoes

cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 small dried chili

1 tsp each kosher salt and black pepper

Parmesan cheese, shredded

1 small white onion, diced

1 fresh basil sprig, or 1/4 tsp dried oregano

Assembly

4 slices mozzarella

Directions

Pizza Buns

1. in a mixing bowl, combine flour, pepper and salt.

2. in a separate mixing bowl, combine cup plus 1 tablespoon water, 1 tablespoon beaten egg and oil; set aside.

3. Preheat oil 425F. Cook frozen pizza as instructed. after cooling cut slices into desired shape and size.

4. Take pizza slice and fully cover with breading mixture. Deep-fry each slice until golden brown. Place on a wire rack to cool.

Meatball Burgers

1. Preheat oven to 350F (175C).

2. Pour milk over breadcrumbs in a bowl; set aside.

3. Whisk egg in bowl until blended. Whisk in salt and generous quantity of black pepper. Whisk in Parmesan and parsley. Add meat to the egg mixture. Use your hands to thoroughly mix egg into ground meat. Add onions, garlic and soaked breadcrumbs to meat. Pinch your meat between your fingers thoroughly.

4. Separate the mix into 4 meatballs, continue shaping until all the meat is used. after formed flatten with your hands until they are desired shape.

5. Arrange meatballs spaced slightly apart on baking sheet, cook for 20 to 25 minutes. Meatballs are done when cooked through and outsides are browned.

Marinara Sauce

1. Pour tomatoes into bowl and crush with hands. Pour 1 cup water into can and swirl to get tomato juices, reserve.

2. in a skillet over medium heat, heat the oil. when hot add garlic and white-diced onion.

3. when garlic is sizzling (do not let it brown), add the tomatoes, then the reserved tomato water. Add whole chili or red pepper flakes, oregano (if using), salt and Parmesan cheese; stir.

4. Place basil sprig on the surface. Let it wilt, then stir into sauce.

5. Simmer sauce until thickened and oil on surface is a deep orange, about 12 minutes.

6. Remove basil and chili at this time.

Assembly

1. Take slice of deep-fried pizza, place meatball on top. Add a slice of mozzarella cheese, and marinara sauce. Top with another pizza bun. Repeat with the other 3 burgers. Place in the oven until the mozzarella has melted and serve.
