Directions for: Pastitsio Pie
Ingredients
Pastitsio Pie1 Tbsp butter
1 onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 lb(s) lean ground beef
tsp dried oregano
tsp cinnamon
tsp salt
tsp pepper
1 can stewed tomato
1 can tomato, paste, (5 1/2 ounces)
1 Tbsp red wine vinegar
cup chopped parsley
2 cup macaroni
2 Tbsp dry breadcrumbs
1 cup grated parmesan cheese
Sauce2 Tbsp butter
2 Tbsp all purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 cup cottage cheese
1 egg
1 pinch nutmeg
1 pinch salt
1 pinch pepper
Directions
Pastitsio Pie1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).
2. in nonstick skillet, melt half of the butter over medium heat; cook onion and garlic, stirring, for 3 minutes.
3. Stir in beef, oregano, cinnamon, salt and pepper; cook, stirring, for 7 to 10 minutes or until no longer pink.
4. Drain off fat.
5. Stir in tomatoes, tomato paste and vinegar; cook, stirring, for 3 minutes.
6. Remove from heat; stir in parsley. Set aside.
7. Meanwhile, in large pot of boiling salted water, cook macaroni for 8 to 10 minutes or until tender but firm.
8. Drain and refresh under cold water; drain again and set aside.
9. Make sauce (see Sauce Directions).
10. Grease 10-inch (25 cm) deep pie plate with remaining butter; sprinkle with bread crumbs.
11. Spoon in half of the macaroni.
12. Spread meat mixture evenly over top, pressing down lightly; sprinkled with one-third of the Parmesan.
13. Spoon remaining macaroni over top; carefully pour sauce over macaroni.
14. (Make ahead: Cover and refrigerate for up to 1 day. Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes; add 10 minutes to baking time.)
15. Sprinkle with remaining Parmesan.
16. Bake on baking sheet for 50 to 60 minutes or until golden.
Sauce1. in saucepan, melt butter over medium heat; stir in flour and cook, whisking, for 2 minutes, without browning.
2. Gradually whisk in milk and cook, whisking, for about5 minutes or until thickened; remove from heat.
3. Stir in cottage cheese, egg, nutmeg, salt and pepper.
